American, the larger two ca. 19th century, the smaller 20th century. Back in the day before dryers, most everyone would hang clothing from lines with clothespins. Earlier ones were like these, not spring loaded, just pressure fit over the line and clothing. Speculation is that these oversized examples hung in country stores over bins in which scores of pins were available for purchase. The largest example is about 24 inches, the two smaller about 18 inches.
