Lothrop T. Holmes (1824–1899), Kingston, Massachusetts, ca. 1860–1870, Paint on wood with glass, 9 1/2 x 16 x 6 in. each | American Folk Art Museum. Lothrop Holmes descended from a family of shipcarvers and earned his living as a cemetery superintendent. Few examples of his work survive, and most were made for his own use. Holmes is best known for his mergansers, but he also carved shorebirds, including yellowlegs, black-bellied plovers, and ruddy turnstones.
